Malawi striker Mwafulirwa on trial at University of Pretoria

Thrown out Flames gangly forward Russell Mwafulirwa is on trials at South Africa’s University of Pretoria (UP) where he is hoping to impress Steve Barker and relaunch his career.

According to Kick-Off report, Mwafulirwa began his trials with Amatuks in Pretoria on Monday.

Mwafulirwa made his name at Silver Strikers before trekking to South Africa where he played for Jomo Cosmos and Ajax Cape Town.

The towering striker – who is married to a South African woman – is keen on a move back to South Africa.

Bloemfontein Celtic – using the influence of their Malawian team manager John Maduka – also attempted to lure Mwafulirwa to the Free State capital.

His last team was Swedish Division Two outfit IK Sleipner. Before that, Mwafulirwa was contracted to the then top-league side IFK Norrkoping where he scored a modest 18 goals out of 55 appearances.

Mwafulirwa last played for Malawi against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifier last year.
