Malawi to defend African netball championships as hosts

Malawi Queens will have to defend the Africa Netball Championship next year as hosts.

Netball Association of Malawi’s president Rosy Chinunda confirmed that the African Netball Association has selected Malawi as next year’s championship host.

She said Malawi feel honoured to be given the task of organising the third edition of the championship.

“We have been given the task to host the event next year, to us it’s the big honour”, she said.

Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Enock Chihana, has assured that government will help to supporting a successful hosting of the tournament.

Africa Netball Association vice chairman Joel Mwakitale said his committee members met last week and agreed that Malawi should host the event while Botswana and Zambia will host in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

“We have agreed that Malawi should host next year’s event, Botswana and Zambia will host in subsequent years, our aim is to see netball reaches many people in all parts of the continent”, he said.

The Africa Netball Championship started in 2010 with the aim of improving and promoting netball in African countries and since its inception ten countries have been competing. It is now an annual event.
