Malawi university student held for concealing birth of a child

Malawi Police in the capital Lilongwe arrested a 17 year old university female student  for concealing the birth of a child and dumping the baby into pit latrine.

The girl, Linda Kachikata, a student at Skyways University hails from Kalonga village in Traditional Authority Kalonga in Salima district.

According to Lilongwe police deputy public relations officer, Kingsley Dandaula, Kachikata’s parents were unhappy with her pregnancy.

“She gave birth to a baby girl on the morning of Friday, December 7 but dumped the live baby into a latrine. Neighbours got suspicious and reported to Kawale police,” Dandaula said adding that when the police arrived at the scene, they arrested the girl and managed to rescue the baby.

The baby was rushed to Bwaila hospital where it is still receiving treatment while her mother is in custody at Kawale police.

Kachikata will be changed with concealing the birth of a child contrary to section 232 of the penal code.

The maximum sentence, if found guilty, is two years imprisonment.
