Malawi Urban Music Party to award media and Lifetime Achievers: Venue changes

As the Urban Music Party (UMP) festival draws near; organisers have introduced Media and Lifetime Achiever awards to be presented to three media practitioners and two Lifetime Achievers during the event slated for July 6.

Organisers say this is as a result of the recognition of the role the media has enormously contributed towards the growth of urban music and the UMP Festival, whose venue has been shifted from the Royal Palm Hotel to Lucky Luciano’s ground in the same Blantyre.

“The media has played a pivotal role in the development of the local urban, arts and culture industry. However their role has not been properly recognised or honored. UMP feels by awarding selected media practitioners for their best work, it will propel media excellence and in a way help develop local urban arts and culture,” said Maurice Nkawihe, Public Relations Manager for UMP in a statement.

Both the media and Achievers Awardees will receive miniature trophies and prizes from Airtel Money and UMP Festival.

In the media category, three media practitioners from print, radio and online will be up for the awards. According to the statement, the selection of the three individuals is currently being decided by the 36 artists and 10 deejays that were nominated by the public for the festival’s headliner voting process.

The results and the presentation ceremony will be done at the Festival’s main event to start from 10 am until 6 pm.

On the Achievers awards, UMP will award two individuals in the category. The Achievers awards have been designed for those who have made a special pioneering contribution to the industry and made observable impact to the evolution of the local urban arts sector.

One of UMP Festival Organisers, Ken Limwame from Nde’feyo Entertainment says the awards are of special significance as they recognise where the arts industry is coming from.

“We have to honor people who started or developed Malawi’s urban music industry and culture to be where it is now. We feel this will encourage more excellence for the current players,” observed Limwame.

The Life Time Awardees will be selected by the UMP Festival’s Organising Team and will be announced days before the Festival. Previous winners are Michael “Dynamike” Munthali and Faith Chibale.

The Festival is being supported by Airtel Money, GOTv (Multichoice), Star Radio, among others and is being organised by a team put together by Nde’feyo Entertainment and Prime Time Media.

Currently, the voting process of the final five urban music artists and three Deejays to headline the UMP festival is underway.

UMP main idea is to promote and celebrate Malawian urban talent and culture so as to contribute to the socio cultural and economic development of Malawi through urban musical performances and various activities within the urban music industry like UMP nights.
