Malawi woman, boy nabbed for aborted ritual killing

Police in the northern region district of Chitipa have arrested a 29 year old woman and a 14 year old boy for an aborted ritual killing of a five year old child.

Northern Region Police Spokesperson Norah Chimwala confirmed the arrests saying the incident happened at Kamphoyo Village, Traditional Authority Nthalire.

The duo will answer charges of kidnapping contrary to Section 260 of the Penal Code and attracts a maximum sentence of 10 years,

The first suspect Wezzie Mbambala of Nthalire Village, Traditional Authority Nthalire in the district had promised the boy (name withheld) MK15,000 if he could deliver the Heart of a young boy.

Mbambala wanted to sell the Heart to a businessman who would then use it for charms to enrich him, she claimed in her warn and caution statement.

“The boy then went home and picked his five year old younger brother and forcefully put him in an empty 90 Kilogramme sack and carried him. But on his way to the forest the boy started crying loudly attracting people’s attention who inquired as to what was happening.

“He then abandoned the sack and started to ran away but people caught him and took him to the Police where he revealed what he wanted to and who had sent him,” Chimwala said.

Meanwhile, Police is advising people that there is no shortcut to riches, and that charms and magic do not make people rich.

“People should therefore be wary of anyone who pretends to know someone who can make them rich through dubious means such as the removal of body parts,” she said.
