Malawi would require K150 billion for Covid-19 response plan – Mutharika

Malawi would require about K150 billion (about $200 million) for the implementation of a national coronavirus (Covid-19) preparedness and response plan, President Peter Mutharika has said.

Mutharika: Fighting coronavirus is a challenging war, everywhere, a very expensive war

Mutharika said this on Tuesday late at night when he announced that the landlocked southern African country will implement a 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus that has claimed two lives.

In a televised national address monitored by Nyasa Times on State broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Mutharika said fighting  Coronavirus is a “challenging war for everyone, everywhere. It is also a very expensive war.”

He said: “As a nation, we require about MK150 billion for the implementation of the National COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan.”

Mutharika warned that up to 50,000 lives could be lost if measures were not put in place to spread the of the virus in the southeastern African country.

“We need to unite,” appealed Mutharika.

“Let me once again appeal to all political leaders that we need to join our hands in fighting this Coronavirus pandemic.

”Noone must take advantage of the suffering of people and politicize Coronavirus. This is not a time for politics. This is a time for saving lives,’’ said the Malawi leader.

The  lockdown will be effective from midnight on Saturday and will end on May 9.

Mutharika cautioned that lockdown may be extended beyond 9th May “as circumstances warrant.’’

A President of the people! Always thinking of his people, the poor and the neglected. The voiceless in the villages, a President always exercising restraint. A true democratic leader.

I’d say APM learnt from the mistakes of his brother and governs with patience but never make the mistake of thinking he is not on top of things.

Before some of us who are quick to comment on other people’s comments without furnishing themselves with the facts please check Uganda’s response measures. APM government is copying and pasting…Why can’t the government of Malawi come up with its own measures tailored for Malawi taking into account the fact that each country is unique socially as well as economically. Some people adazolowera kuonera am sure kuonera kwa mkalasi sukudathe. Zimatero ngati ma qualification ake adapangidwa attain through kuwonera in real life zimawakanika kudziganizira…lol

Where will the K150B come from? Tax paying businesses will be closed down starting from Saturday 18th. A lot of Malawians will lose jobs and businesses as a result of a lockwdown which lacks backup plan and forecasting. Lockdown means less economic activities and hence less money collected by MRA. The principles of simple economics. Good example is the US. 20 million people without jobs, from something like 3.3 million few weeks ago. Some of us predicted this very long time ago that the Coronavirus will hit more negatively the corrupt DPP led government more that the opposition. Let us… Read more »

Munakula movutika? Always fighting for food? I don’t know anyone who improves their life by selling all they have instead of acquiring more and aspiring for a better life.

What does selling all the gorvernment assets benefit anyone only to buy again at a later date at a new inflated price?? What kind of logic is this? Envy and jealousy dey kill you oh
