Malawian boy buried alive -Police

A five-year-old boy has died suddenly after an excavator belonging to Unitrans Haulage Company, a contracted company for Illovo Dwangwa, accidentally buried him alive.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at about 3:00 pm within Dwangwa Sugar Estates when the tractor was working along Dwangwa River.

Nkhunga Police Spokesperson Laban Makalani said during the time, the tractor was clearing the river (Dwangwa) canal and the boy identified as Edwin Banda of Njolonjo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota was playing around the truck alongside his friends.

“In course of playing, driver of tractor, who was not aware that the child was in front of the tractor, pushed a large heap of sand over the child. In the process, the child was totally covered by the sand and he died due to suffocation,” Makalani said.

Following the development, the boy was rushed to Matiki Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Meanwhile, Nkhunga Police is appealing to members of the general public in the district to guard their children properly and advise them to refrain from playing near to where excavators and tractors belonging to companies within Dwangwa Sugar Estates are working in order to avoid similar accidents.
