Malawian Catholics celebrate with mothers on Mothers’ Day

Mothers’ Day in Malawi, celebrated every October, is greatly revered. People lavish gifts to their mothers on this day and those who lost them mostly channel their maternal love to those nearby.

Members of the Catholic Church for Chinyonga Ward, what is known as St. Rita Mphakati, saw it wise that, as part of their social obligation, they should pay a visit to Bvumbwe health centre martenity to donate assorted items as a gift.

They did it on Monday, October 17 and there they found some mothers with newly-born babies whom they convinvially interracted with and shared their gifts that included a chitenje wrap  — written Happy Mothers Day — soaps, body lotion and sugar.

Chairman of the Catholic Church Chinyonga Mphakati, Donasius Pathera, said this was part of their programme they set at the beginning of the year as part of their social obligations.

“We have a strategic plan and one of them is to assist the community,” he said. “This year we decided that we should assist mothers on Mothers Day because mothers are very important in our society.

“With the little that we have, we chose this health martenity centre because it gives life to children who would later play an important role in our society.

“The gift of a child is a precious gift, we are what we are today because of our mothers and as part of our social obligation we thought we should do something for some of the mothers from this community,” Pathera said.
