Malawian commits suicide by jumping off moving bus in Zimbabwe

A Malawian citizen last week committed suicide in Zimbabwe after jumping off a moving bus which was enroute to Malawi from Johannesburg in South Africa.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Enoch Kadammanja, is reported to have died on the spot after thrown himself out of the cruising bus through a broken rear windscreen.

The  accident occurred at the 195km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda road.

According to acting Mashonaland East Province Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Tendai Mwanza, saying the late Kadamanja was aboard a Scania Marcopolo cross-border bus, registration number MC4368.

Kadammanja: He jumped of the speeding bus

“The bus was coming from Johannesburg enroute to Malawi with 34 passengers on board. As it approached the 195km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda road, Kadamanja allegedly stood up from his seat and proceeded to the back seat where he grabbed a satellite dish mounting and broke the rear windscreen before jumping off,” Sgt Mwanza told Zimbabwe’s Herald newspaper.

He said another passenger close to the windscreen tried to prevent him but he jumped off the bus through the broken windscreen and died on the spot after hiting the tarmac.

The police spokesperson said some passengers alerted the driver who stopped the bus and reported the matter at Nyamapanda Police who later attended the scene.

His body was taken to Kotwa Hospital in the area for a postmortem.  The  body was  repatriated home and burial took place on Monday.

Nyasa Times established that Kadammanja hails from Bunda in Lilongwe. He has left a wife and a one year old daughter in South Africa.

According to his wife, her husband went to South Africa to search for greener pastures few years ago. Towards the end of December 2012, Kadammanja fell sick and failed to get medical attention in South Africa as he had no legal rights to stay.

He was returning to Malawi to seek medical attention.
