Malawian couple arrested for abandoning child

Blantyre Police have arrested a young couple for abandoning their eight-month old son following disagreements.

The couple, Lameck Alfred aged 29 and Sigere Alfred 20 years old abandoned the baby on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at around 08:00hours behind Sky Way University campus in Blantyre city.

Blantyre Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Lameck Thembachako said meanwhile the baby is at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for special attention as the couple is still under police custody.

“In the morning hours of Thursday, students from Sky Way University found a baby boy near their campus and were handed over to Police in Blantyre who later took up the matter with Social Welfare offices that took the baby to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.arrested

“On Friday, May 24, 2013; Mrs. Sigere Alfred approached Blantyre police offices to lodge a complaint of her missing baby. After interrogation, it was learnt that the baby was abandoned after the two quarreled.

“She claimed to have left their two babies with the husband at Wenela bus depot where, he ply his trade as a call boy, on argument that he had left them for three days without basic needs,” Thembachako said.

The couple, according to the police publicist, has been married for five years and has two children. The elder one is two years.

“The couple picked a quarrel over a burning candle. She complained that he slapped her. He was drunk. But before he left the house, his wife had mobilized neighborhood watchmen to assault for battering her”.
