Malawian Pastor sent to jail for theft by trick

Thyolo magistrate court has sent a pastor to four years in jail with hard labour for deceit after he collected K300, 000 from poor villagers in a fertilizer deal that never materialised.

Prosecutors told the court that Pastor Peter Solomon Linyama of Holy Cross Ambassador went to the area of chief Nanseta in Thyolo where he promised in early October that he would provide two bags of fertilizer to each household that gave him advance processing fee of K10000.

The prosecutors said Linyama collected K300, 000 in the process but failed to deliver the NPK and Urea bags of fertilizer as promised.

The villagers then informed the police who hunted him and was arrested end October.

In his ruling Magistrate Ben Chitsakamire said the stiffer punishment was meted out because religious leaders are expected to be exemplary.

His co accused Associate Pastor Ferguson Musai was acquitted.

However the court sent the man of God to the four years in jail for theft.

He has since started serving his jail term.

Pastor Linyama comes from Nkasala Village in Tradional Authority Kalembo in Balaka District.

    You Treeza Namathanga are hereby being sentenced to 3.5 years for stealing at least K63mn (it is very wrong for civil servants to steal).

    You Esnart are being sentenced to 3.5 years for stealing K12.9mn . . .

    And you Pastor Peter Solomon are being given a 4 year jail term for stealing K0.3mn (it is very wrong for pastors to steal)

    Among others an underdeveloped justice system is blamed for the underdevelopment of the financial system (Beck, Demigurc-Kunt et. al.). Unfair delivery of justice scares away investors because enforcement of financial contracts e.g. collateral (in case of debt) or share holding (in case of equity) in case of default or whatever risk, is uncertain.

    Trust me the cited cases, do not reflect well on the judges’ professionalism. One or two of the judges is in the wrong!

  19. Dear moderator of comments, thanks for changing the mistake in the headline, at least you took notice of my observation before declining to publish my comment. But that’s understandable for obvious reasons.

    FYI-for your information- I don’t just sit there looking for mistakes, no. I actually like reading your publication, all the breaking news, political, religious as well as social news from mmakwalalamu.
