Malawian senior chief committed to prison for 21-days

A Malawian senior traditional leader from Dedza district has been committed to prison for a 21-day period for contempt of court.

Police arrested Traditional Authority (TA) Kasumbu last Friday on instructions by the High Court after violating an injunction it issued instructing him to stop cultivating on somebody’s land.

The traditional leader spent Friday night at Dedza Prison before being ferried to Dedza District Hospital for admission after he suffered from High Blood Pressure (HBP).

According to the order of committal issued by High Court Judge Ivy Kamanga, the traditional leader was found guilty of contempt of court for continually cultivating on the land despite being served with an injunction to stop.

The piece of land belongs to Sauzande Wilson and T/A Kasumbu was found guilty for defying the court order by continuously farming on it despite the injunction.

The order indicates that the injunction was served on him on 27th November, 2008.

The court has ordered that T/A Kasumbu be committed to Dedza Prison for 21-days starting from the date of his detention.
