Malawian star inspires Bidvest to first league: Gerald Phiri Jnr vital goal against Pirates

Malawian star midfielder Gerald Phiri inspired South African Premiership defending champions Bidvest Wits to their first league victory with a 1-0 triumph over Orlando Pirates at the Bidvest Wits Stadium on Saturday evening.

Phiri, who has returned from a year long loan at Platinum Stars, edged Wits ahead in the fifth‚ followed by 85 minutes of the type of football that saw fans clenching bottoms on the edge of their seats.

The dead piece specialist who has scored vital goals for his country has proved critics wrong that he would have tough time to enjoy his game.

But coach Gavin Hunt’s faith in the Malawian paid off with the team’s first win which has lifted them off the relegation zone.

They have five points from six games perching in the middle of the 16 team log table.

“Bidvest Wits claimed their first win of the Absa Premiership season after defeating Orlando Pirates 1-0. The home side signalled their intent early on and they took the lead in the 20th minute through Gerald Phiri’s fine finish from eight-yards out,” reports Kick off. Com.

Phiri’s compatriot Gabadinho Mhango was selected for the encounter but was unused substitute amid spitting accusations in a game mid last week.
