Malawian wins Nissan Qashqai in AFCON Goal of the Tournament fan competition

A Malawi tea-estate employee Harry Assima has emerged as winner of a brand new Nissan Qashqai in the AFCON 2015 Goal of the Tournament fan competition, the automaker, Nissan said on Friday.

It said in a statement the development comes after Nissan, the official automotive sponsor of AFCON 2015, presented the Goal of the Tournament trophy to Ghanaian left winger Christian Atsu for his stunning strike against Guinea in the quarter-final of the tournament.

Assima, a stores controller at Lujeri Tea Estates in Mulanje, will be the first person to own the all-new Nissan Qashqai in Malawi. It is also his first Nissan vehicle.

The vehicle will be handed over to Assima in Mulanje at a date in March 2015.

Reacting to his charm luck, Assima said; “This is the first car I’ve owned that is brand new and I will use it to go on journeys and drives with my wife. I am always in town over the weekends so I will have an experience with the vehicle.”

“I will treasure it, as it was my first stroke of fortune and consider this my marriage present as we have only been married for three months,” he added.

The competition ran throughout the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations tournament and allowed fans to cast their votes for the best and most exciting goal on the SuperSport website. More than 16 000 votes were recorded by the end of the final match.

Once CAF announced Atsu as the Goal of the Tournament scorer, all votes for this goal were entered into a draw and the winner was randomly selected.

“While our ambassador Yaya Touré strategically engineered excitement on the field, Nissan made sure fans could directly interact with the tournament, taking the excitement to their computer or mobile screens,” said Mike Whitfield, Managing Director of Nissan South Africa and head of the sub-Saharan Africa region for the company.

“We pioneered crossovers with the Nissan Qashqai and it has been a huge hit with customers –more than two million have been built so far. We are bringing the Qashqai to markets across Africa as we push for growth on the continent. Mr Assima will be our first Qashqai driver in Malawi and I would like to wish him many happy and revitalising kilometres in his new car.”

Nissan’s sponsorship of Orange AFCON 2015 was another example of its dedication and growth in global sports, which also includes Nissan Brazil’s proud sponsorship of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Team Brazil and Brazil Paralympic Delegation, official sponsorship of the Colombia and Mexico Olympic Teams in their respective regions, Team GB and Paralympics GB in the UK, Orange Africa Cup of Nations 2013 and 2015, NCAA Football, Canadian Football League, corporate partner for Heisman Trust/Heisman Trophy and the official global automotive partner of City Football Group.

Nissan has a number of sporting ambassadors including Olympic and Paralympic Gold Medalists Usain Bolt, Sir Chris Hoy and Richard Whitehead, Brazilian Olympians Jovane Guissone and Vitor Felipe as well as footballers Andrés Iniesta, Thiago Silva, Yaya Touré and Max Meyer.
