Malawi’s corporate guru Thom Kanyuka dies

Corporate guru, Thom Kanyuka has died after giving in to the fight against cancer at the Blantyre Adventist Hospital early morning Tuesday.

The late Thom Kanyuka

One of the family members, Chris Kanyuka said burial of the late Kanyuka will be held on Thursday at Misesa Cemetery in Blantyre after a church service at St Pauls Anglican cathedral in Blantyre where he used to be an active church member.

Thomas Oswald Bernard Kanyuka, fondly called TOB by those close to him, was born on 20th December 1944 and was the first born to a late eminent Malawian civil servant and educationist Justus Kanyuka.

The late Kanyuka leaves behind a legacy of honest and dedicated service to family and country.

“After graduating with A Levels from Dedza Secondary School in 1963, he joined the civil service in the Ministry of Finance and upon establishment of  the Malawi Development Corporation (MDC), he joined as Projects Manager and served diligently until his retirement in the late 70’s after having risen to the position of General Manager,” said Chris Kanyuka.

Thereafter TOB served at top management levels with Lonrho and Knight Frank before finally retiring a few years ago.

“Apart from serving his country through full time employment, TOB also served his country in elite boards including Air Malawi,  Malawi Hotels, Britam, Lafarge, Broll Malawi, the Anglican Council and St. Johns Ambulance, just to mention a few.”

“During his employment years, TOB furthered his education by obtaining graduate and postgraduate degrees and certifications,” added Chris Kanyuka.

The late Kanyuka is survived by a wife, children, grand children and siblings.

Church Warden for the English Service at St Pauls Cathedral Paul Mazingaliwa described the late Kanyuka as a dedicated member who inspired many at the church.

“Even when he was ill, he could force himself to come to church and pray. He was an inspiration to many and we have lost a dedicated member of this church. May his soul rest in peace,” said Mazingaliwa.

Vigil is being held at his residence in BCA Hill and burial will take place on Thursday 22nd June 2017 at Misesa Cementry after a funeral service at home from 9 a.m. and thereafter Eucharist mass at St. Paul’s Aglican Church from noon.
