Malawi’s ‘Golden Boy’ Chilemba faces Russian boxer March 14: To be televised
Malawi’s South Africa based boxer Isaac Chilemba faces a Russian opponent in the light-heavyweight Vasily Lipkhin in Montreal Canada.
The bout is an eliminator for winner of the main bout between Sergey Kovalev and former champion Jean Pascal.
ESPN, Main Events and Interbox announced that the 10 round Chilemba-Lipikhni bout will open the HBO televised triple header.
“We had a great opportunity with this opening bout for Isaac to be on HBO and move up in the eyes of the boxing public,” Main Event Chief Executive told ESPN.
“In a fortuitous turn of events Vasily will get the same opportunity and Main Events and German’s Tito Promotions will grow what has become a great working relationship in Canada with Interbox.”
The 27-year-old Chilemba with a record of 23-2-2, 10 Kos goes into the ring within next month boasting four-straight wins since his decision loss to England’s Tony Bellow in May 2013, said he was geared for the fight.
“I am happy for this fight and happy to step into the ring with anyone that put in front of me,” Chilemba said.
“I never underestimate my opponents and I always come prepared. I am looking forward toMarch 14. I will get the job done.”
Chilemba’s manager Jodi Solomon is optimistic that the Golden Boy would excel.
“Isaac is hardworking, disciplined athlete. He is serious about boxing and even winning. This is a dedication to showcase his dedication to the sport,” Solomon said.
“I believe it’s very well matched both fighters being accomplished in their own right. It should make for a very exciting fight.”
The Russian, who is two years older than Chilemba has a record of 17-0 and 9 knockouts.
