Malawi’s ruling PP faces litmus test in 2 Mzimba by-elections

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)  has announced  that launch of by-elections for Mzimba Southwest and Mzimba Central constituencies will be held simultaneously in the two  constituencies on Wednesday, August 1, 2012.

The by-elections h will serve as a litmus test for s the ruling People’s Party of President Mrs  Joyce Banda which has been running the affairs of the nation from April 7.

This will give the participating political parties to gauge their performance and relevance to the Malawian populace ahead of 2014 general elections.

Mzimba Central constituency fell vacant following the death of Professor Donton Mkandawire  while Mzimba Southwest became vacant following the ascendance of Khumbo Kachali to the office of vice-president.

MEC has not set dates for polling in the by-elections but said in a statement made available to Nyasa Times that during the launch, it will outline the calendar overview and explain the  procedures to be followed during various stages of the electoral  process.

“ The Commission is inviting all to attend and some of the stakeholders expected to attend include political parties, civil society organizations,  aspiring parliamentary candidates, faith leaders, traditional leaders and the media,” said MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa.

Mwafulirwa , in the statement, said the launch in Mzimba Southwest Constituency will be held at Edingeni Teacher Development Centre (TDC) while in Mzimba Central it will be at Kapiri TDC. Both  functions will start at 09.00am.
