Malawi’s U-20s begin Afcon qualifying campaign with narrow defeat to Zambia

Malawi’s Under-20 Men’s National Football Team, the Junior Flames, opened their campaign in the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations Cosafa Qualifier with a 2-0 defeat to Zambia in their Group C opener, a result that flattered the visitors given the closeness of the contest.

The tie remained goalless for long periods before Zambia’s Billy Daka struck twice late on, netting in the 78th minute and again deep into stoppage time to settle a match that had otherwise been tightly contested.

Malawi’s cause was not helped in the closing stages when an appeal for a penalty, after starlet Mwisho Mhango appeared to be fouled inside the box in the 89th minute, was waved away by the referee — a decision that will be debated by Malawian supporters in the days ahead.

The result marks a difficult start for the Junior Flames in a qualifying tournament that carries significant weight for Malawian football’s development pipeline.

The Cosafa qualifying phase forms part of the wider CAF Under-20 Afcon qualification process, through which southern African nations compete for a limited number of places at the continental finals — itself a crucial stepping stone for young players hoping to break into senior international football and attract the attention of scouts from clubs across Africa and beyond.

Malawi’s youth football sides have historically found it difficult to translate promising individual talent into consistent tournament results, with limited exposure to high-level continental competition often cited as a contributing factor.

A campaign at this year’s Afcon qualifiers would represent a rare opportunity for the current crop of young players to test themselves against regional rivals and gain valuable experience ahead of the senior ranks.
