Man, 60, dies after drowning in Lake Malawi

A 60-year-old man died recently in Nkhotakota district after he drowned in Lake Malawi where he had gone to fish, police and family members have confirmed.

The man, Amanzi  Mwamadi, of Chongole 3 Village from the area of Senior Chief Mwadzama in the district met his fate as he wanted to fix his fishing net inside the waters.

According to the deceased son, Azizi, his dad was in the company of five other fishermen when the incident occurred.

Azizi told police as the six were busy fishing, his late father realized that his net was stuck in the waters and decided to go inside it and rectify the problem.

“Surprisingly, after getting into the waters he never resurfaced. His colleagues then launched a search but to no avail. He was found floating dead the following day,” Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino told Nyasa Times.

A postmortem conducted at Nkhotakota District Hospital indicated that the death was caused by suffocation due to the drowning.

Meanwhile, the police have advised fishermen along the lake to follow and observe weather forecasts before embarking on their fishing ventures and have also appealed to Malawians to avoid crossing flooded rivers.
