A 24 year old man who allegedly defiled a 3- year old nursery school girl has been arrested by the Police at Kanengo in the Capital of Lilongwe.

The suspect, Chimwemwe Tewete was earlier this week reported to have had sexually assaulted the victim on different occasions and got arrested Tuesday.

Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer, Salomy Chibwana told Nyasa Times that both the suspect and victim lived in the same compound where the former was renting the guest wing of the main house.

The Police publicist further explained that upon returning from work in the evening, the girl’s mother noticed bruises over the victim’s private parts the time she was bathing her. When asked of what happened to her, the girl confessed to have been defiled.

“We are indeed keeping in custody of Mr. Chimwemwe Tewete on charges of defilement. He was arrested yesterday [Tuesday] for having sexual intercourse with a 3 year old girl at Area 25 near Lilongwe Teachers College,

“They both lived in the same compound. Usually the victim’s parents go to work so the suspect took that as an advantage to accomplish his wish on the little girl. He is said to have enticed the victim with sweets and got the chance to abuse her,” explained Chibwana.

According to Chibwana, the girl’s parents reported the matter to police and had rushed the girl to Area 25 Clinic where it was established that she sustained bruises on her private parts.  Tewete is expected to appear before Nkukula Magistrate Court in Dowa this Thursday.

Defilement is in contrast to section 138 of the Penal Code and attracts 14 years Imprisonment with hard labour when found guilty.  The suspect comes from Kapovu Village Traditional Authority  Kabudula, same district.
