Man caged 7 years for burning wife’s private parts

Chitipa Magistrate court in northern Malawi has sentenced a husband who burnt his wife’s private parts to seven years imprisonment with hard labour.

Francis Sichali, prosecuting, told the court that Siti Sulumbu, 39 burnt his wife’s private parts with hot ashes on September 6 when the woman, Julia Nambeye aged 36 wanted to file for divorce.

First Grade Magistrate Julius Kalambo said the attack by Sulumbu was “inhuman” and said he deserved a lengthy prison sentence.

The magistrate noted that the offence is one of the gravest kind, saying the wife was left with severe burns

He therefore sentenced Sulumbu to seven years jail.

Recently in the same Chitipa district, a 25-year-old woman Alice Chabiri of Nakachenja Village, T/A Mwabulambia was battling for her life after her husband  Steward Silungwe (34) allegedly pushed her onto a fire.
