Man jailed 14 years for sexual assault on girl, 13
The Mwanza Magistrate Court has convicted Steven Laiton, 23, to 14 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for defiling a 13 year old girl (name withheld).
Mwanza Police Public Relation Officer (PRO) Edwin Kaunda confirmed the development on Friday saying Laiton had been defiling the under aged girl since July 2016 to January this year.
“In January 2017, the mother of the young girl got surprised with changes in the body appearance of her daughter which she suspected that she might be pregnant. She invited some elderly women in the village to question her daughter. The girl told the women that she has a boyfriend whom she has been having sex with,” he explained.
He added that the mother took the girl to Mwanza Police where they were referred to Mwanza District Hospital for check up, medical results showed that the girl was four months pregnant.
Kaunda said the defiler was later arrested on 19 January 2017 and appeared before court on 20 January 2017.
The convict pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement.
According to Kaunda, the police through Prosecutor Sub Inspector Joshua Chirambo summoned five witnesses to testify against Steven.
Passing judgment, First Grade Mmagistrate Ranwell Mangazi slapped Laiton with 14 years IHL saying what he did to the young girl will have a long time effect on her life.
Laiton hails from Manase Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapeni in Blantyre.
