Man killed on President Mutharika’s convoy identified

A man died on the spot after being run over by a speeding vehicle on a presidential convoy fleet with President Bingu wa Mutharika on it, Police have confirmed.

Police spokesman Nicholous Gondwa said the victim is Edwin Kagolo, 38, from Hiwa village in the area of Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu.

Mutharika’s motorcade was moving from the Sanjika Palace in Blantyre to his private Ndata Palace in Thyolo.

State House sources said Mutharika was not affected by the accident and the victim identity was not independently verified.

A number of Mutharika’s escorts who usual ride at high speeds have been seriously injured in accidents.

Government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati urges motorists to always give precedence to Mutharika’s huge motorcade which has close to 20 vehicles.

When the 79-year-old Mutharika is driving around town, the roads are cleared and some are blocked to make way for his cars.

Mutharika’s security and motorcade has ballooned as Malawians show increasing resistance to his rule which is bedevilled with economic crisis, human rights abuses and nepotism.
