Man kills own father after visiting witch doctors

Police in Nkhotakota District are keeping in custody a 23 year old man who axed his father to death after several witch doctors pointed his father as the source of his myriad problems.

Police have since recovered a mobile phone and MK5,000 cash from the initial MK14,000 which they believe was stolen from the deceased.

Nkhunga Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Laban Makalani said the suspect Yobe Saka from Tionanenge village in the area of Traditional Authority Kafuzira in the district was nabbed on Tuesday this week following a tip off from the public.

He said Saka was arrested whilst hiding at a remote village in Nkhata Bay district following a three day man hunt. He is expected to answer a case of murder under section 209 of the penal code.

“He is claiming that four witch doctors disclosed to him that his father was in possessing of a charm (Nyanga) and which he has been using to cause sicknesses within his family,” Makalani said.

According to Police the deceased, Kusokwa Banda, aged 63, was murdered on Monday 21st May, 2012 inside Nkhotakota Game Reserve where the two went for poaching.

Following the incident the suspect reported back home alone. But her mother Tumaida Banda was surprised to see her son back home alone. When she inquired the son told her that he left him at the bush and that he had come to collect some relish.

But On Thursday the 24th May, the mother was alarmed to discover that his son left the village taking with him all his belongings and she reported the matter to her relatives.

The following day, villagers mounted a search for the deceased and they managed to recover his body on Friday 25th May.
