‘Man of God’ arrested for sexual assualt in Balaka

Malawi Police in Balaka are keeping in custody Pastor Henry January for allegedly defiling a 15-year old girl, police have confirmed.

January, 39, of Zion Christian Church, had been ministering at an out church in the district when he met the girl and her mother.

According to Balaka Police publicist Joseph Sauka, the ‘Man of God’ had told the unsuspecting girl that he had a vision from God in which the Holy Spirit instructed him to pray for her in order to ward off an impending illness that would make the girl go mad.

The girl, now a mother of a two months old baby, was fourteen.

“The victim then went to stay with the suspect at his house where he started defiling her until she got pregnant months later,” said Sauka. “He threatened her not to reveal.”

Sauka said the issue reached the victim’s parents who took it to church elders and eventually reported the matter to the police.

January, who hails from Mbweya village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chakhadza’s area in Dowa district has been charged with defilement for contravening section 138 (1) of the Penal Code.
