Man strangles step-son to death, on the run

A 25 years-old man in Phalombe district is currently on police most wanted list for allegedly strangling his three year old step-son to death.

The suspect, Chifundo Sapala who hails from Chionda village T/A Nazombe is said to have committed the offence on Saturday April 12th, 2014 before he went at large.

Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi told Nyasa Times the victim, Zitha Mpenda hailed from Chabe village T/A Kaduya in Phalombe.

“The incident occurred on Saturday the 12th of April, 2014 around 2000 hours at Chionda village. On that particular day the mother left the kid with her sister in-law (Bertha Mwanakhu) as she went to a maize mill in the area,” Nkhwazi said.

Nkhwazi added: “When she came back from the maize mill, she was told that the child was taken by his step-father to a nearby grocery where he wanted to buy the kid some soft drinks.

“Surprisingly, the father came back with the child at around 2100 hours while the kid was dead”.

However, according to Nkhwazi, Sapala became a fugitive soon after the mother went about informing relatives about the death.

Hospital post-mortem results revealed the child died due to strangulation.

Meanwhile police are on the hunt for Sapala who is to be charged with murder contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
