MBC boss Brian Banda dies after short illness

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) director general Brian Banda has died following a short illness at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre.

Brian Banda:No more

News of his death is expected to be met with an outpouring of tributes from across Malawi’s media and broadcasting sector, given his senior position at the helm of the country’s national broadcaster.

MBC is Malawi’s state-owned broadcaster, operating both radio and television services and playing a central role in disseminating government information, news and public affairs programming across the country.

As director general, Banda held one of the most senior positions in Malawi’s state media apparatus, overseeing the corporation’s operations, editorial direction and its relationship with government at a time when the broadcasting sector has faced heightened scrutiny.

His death comes during a period of intense debate over media standards in Malawi, with private  broadcasters having recently come under fire from both government and the Media Council of Malawi over disputed reporting on President Peter Mutharika’s foreign travel. It is not yet clear what impact, if any, his death will have on the corporation’s day-to-day leadership or ongoing editorial matters.

No further details have yet been released regarding the nature of his illness or the exact date of his passing, and MBC has not yet issued an official statement confirming arrangements for a successor or for any memorial proceedings.

Colleagues, government officials and figures across Malawi’s broadcasting industry are expected to pay tribute to Banda in the coming days, reflecting on his contribution to the corporation and to the wider media landscape in the country.

Further details, including information on funeral arrangements, are expected to be released by MBC and the family in due course. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

This man was really interviewing great men and made sure that malawi could always recognize their icons.

To me I have always admired how he strategically made sure that the citizens of malawi 🇲🇼 know what Is really going on by interviewing different and highly decorated Men. Like men from the government, corporate world Entrepreneurs, the youths and many more i can’t mention them cause it will take 12 pages to finish listing them down.

And many more that I can’t mention its alot that he really showed us how to make that we acquire information by listening to great men of any kind, because for them to be great they passed through alot of experiences, and Mr Brian made sure he could call them and ask questions that individuals who are really serious about there life are acquiring informations directly from them than hearsays.

Am really disappointed 😞 and may the Family of Mr Brian be comforted by The Lord Almighty. Because they should know that this Icon can never be replaceable.

This is really a Huge blow to the country.

May the soul of this Great man Rest in peace.

May God please bless Malawi and preserve all the remaining icons because we are yet to learn from them. Hide them under the secret place according to Psalms 91 vs 1 -16
