MBC cancels Easter Vespers due to Bingu’s death

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation has cancelled Easter Vespers scheduled for Saturday (April 7) because of the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

But in its cancellation announcement, the state broadcaster was diplomatic as it avoided to give the death as reason for the cancellation.

MBC said on Friday night that the cancellation was due to “due to unforeseen circumstances”, the state radio announced on Friday night.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be able to carry out the much awaited MBC vespers which was scheduled to take place tomorrow 7th April at Robin’s Park in Blantyre. We apologise for any inconveniences this may cause,” reads the announcement from MBC.

The cancellation has disturbed many choirs and other stakeholders that had already traveled to Blantyre to participate in the vespers at Robin’s Park.

Both MBC TV and radio spent many weeks carrying an advert about the vespers urging people to come and participate at only K200 fee.

The broadcaster said it had a successful similar ceremony last year in Mzuzu.

Easter vespers ceremony brings together various gospel artists who give a gospel show to patrons.
