MBC commits to change news bulletin: Hope Chisanu, Maseya, Chinkhwende ‘warehoused’

Public broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), highly considered as a mouth piece for former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has committed to changing the face of its bulletins, saying no news source is barred from featuring on its platforms.

MBC director general Aubrey Sumbuleta (L) tells Minister Kazako: We will correct our past mistakes

This commitment, according to internal communication Nyasa Times has seen between news management and the reporters, follows a new policy direction the Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako has given the public broadcaster.

The communication also discourages dominating the bulletins with ministerial stories.

MBC  has since advised it’s staff to engage extra gear in being creative by coming up with story ideas or topical issues that that will be featuring comments from experts.

“Let us also endeavor to do more human interesting stories. We can get a number of expert comments on a specific topic.

“We have equally been advised against bias. Let’s strive to balance our stories and when writing let us not be seen to be tailing a line. Let’s be independent and impartial.

“No news source has been barred from featuring on our platforms, therefore  let us reach out to whoever has to be heard in the story. This will call for us to work extra harder,” reads the communication in part.

Recently, Kazako visited MBC – where he worked as a broadcaster for a long time –  and reprimanded members of staff for not serving the interests of Malawians.

He pledged to ‘sanitize’ MBC and challenged the staff members to prove that they can do better.

Kazako assured them that the sanitization process will not be aimed at eliminating workers affiliated to the DPP, but rather using merit.

However, a week after Kazako’s tour of MBC, it was directed (directive believed to be from above) that Greyson Chapita, Steven Maseya, Noel Chimkwende, Hope Chisanu, Henry Haukeya, Marie Segula, Barbra Mwandira should not been seen or heard on any of the MBC platforms, mainly MBC TV and Radio.

Commentators argue that MBC needs complete overhaul and new management.

  1. MBC has guiding policies but they choose to forego them and serve political directives. Thes members of staff are just used within the propaganda scheme and of course a little of dyera on their part. Let MBC fish out its dusted policy documents and start following them…parties come and go…they must also revise their recruitment policies..kumeneku nde kumachoka ana anjoka…

  2. Poor kazako. These people who are being victimized worked under directives. Don’t cheat the citizenry that MBC will change. The only thing you should have done is to make them change but not make them vanish. Don’t expect that you can create 1 million jobs by hiring and firing. Not every program by these people was in support of the former regime. Is reach out and touch a DPP thing? I have just singled out one.

  3. MBC is unnecessary and obsolete. It should get terminated and scrapped. Malawi government doesn’t need a state media house!

  4. It means we have the same old song. “Directive from above”. When shall we see real change? Why does change of govt leads to changes in various parastals including mbc? Why should these people not to be seen or heard on mbc? Is it about kubwezera? Who spoils these people? Are they not you, politicians? Why should the authorities not come out clear and tell Malawians why they dont want some mbc staff becoz they are affiliated to opposition parties? Malawi will never change. The same old song.

  5. Gospel is probably the worst minister to have ever headed the ministry of information. If Chakwera is not careful it is such misfits who are going to destroy his government. Bottoman was somehow good compared to this street journalist. Owning a radio does not qualify him for such important national job. He is wasting our time reminding us about the past yet we live in the present and are going into the future. Though Kunkuyu sometimes gets taken away but he is much better and composed than this rascal

  6. Just demolish everything and George Kasakula to revitalize it otherwise I’ll continue not watching it

  7. The foolish Kazako wants to degrade MBC as his competitor so as to promote the success of his political zodiac. Shame!

  8. It is not fair to keep Sumbuleta and send the juniors to “the warehouse”. He must be the first to smell the coffee because he was the CEO.

    1. You have my support. The first man to be warehoused at MBC should have Mr Fumbuleta

  9. some of these people just need to be disciplined , we need Mary Segula, Noel Chimkwende and Babra Mwandira to remain.
    We need their talent

  10. We voted dpp out for a multitude of reasons and one of them is the way MBC behaved since 1994. We change from one party system of government to multiparty system of government but the parties that came in were even worse than the MCP government and MBC was even worse than it was. We could even see phuzo or kutukwana za mkabula a Vice President. The Maseya becoming lawyers and could stand despising the judiciary in front of cameras. What was Aubrey Sumbuleta doing about this? These guys at MBC must go together with APM. They do not deserve to be paid from our taxes. The government must check how MBC recruited it’s personnel. Those that come because of connections to dpp must go and continue to be paid by dpp who stole loads of money.

  11. The country needs innovative and creative journalists. Its a sign of laziness to just be reporting on what ministers did this morning etc….

Do some investigations, do some analysis, talk to some experts etc…. Otherwise anybody can do your job at the current rate that you are going

Write or report on causes of land disputes, corruption in the police, underage sex and peadophilia in the country, why indians dont take part in voting and other civic duties, judicial corruption, current economic and business challenges, impact of covid 19 on education and medical service providers…..etc…..

    1. I wish I could upvote this a hundred times. To them, journalism is just following ministers around.

  12. Indeed it needs complete overhaul & new management. Bring in George Kasakula as Director as it has been rumoured, I think that it will help to revamp it.

    1. Vuto la a Kasakula ndiye akuonetseratu u MCP, ndiye balancing issues izivuta. Akanangolemba wina basi. Koma Gospel Kazako nayenso asamangire kuti wailesi yake izikhala ngati yapamwamba. Ife tikufuna MBC ikhale wailesi yodalirika popereka nkhani.

  13. Commedable maka Hope Chisanu, Haukea, Chapita ndi uyu mmamuti Maseya. Send these guys to Mloza boarder transmitting Unit. They belong there.

  14. Aubrey Sumbuleta, osesrous Chirwa, George mkandawire must also be included in “the warehouse”. They thought ambwiyawo would reign this nation forever. Shame on you briefcase journalists!! And that advert akuti ‘the biggest o nothing 82% listenership vichi vichi kwali. Nonsense. Be mature MBC we want to see changes. Zokonda amayi macheza is useless just keeping our women lazy and glued to the radio instead of working. Shit.

    1. mmmmm…ahahahahaah. koma ndaseka, someone from mbc has written this, check how its written. MBC needs to be dissolved otherwise this new leadership will regret, currently there are people that are working with DPP Ssilently at mbc..watch out, watch out.

      1. MBC is a Public Broadcaster. Don’t you forget this! SO YOU WANT A REPEAT OF THE PAST? NO REASON TO REMOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Do you want ana anuwo adzachosedwe akazabwela ena? If you want MBC to change leave the guys and change their attitudes. ASK BBC TO HELP YOU.
