MBC TV fires 20 staff, faces another legal jab

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) TV faces a fresh legal tussle after they fired over 20 employees giving them a month notice to wind up duties.

Among the employees are Dyson Milanzi, Maria Bauleni, Bester Nyangwa,

The staff was promised fulltime employment after they were engaged in as temporary employees two years ago.

Director of Programs and News, Chimwemwe Banda, directed the Human Resource department to send home packing the new talent.

“They have been given letters to wind up by January 29th, 2012,” an MBCTV official said.

The other group is from technical department, some who were sent to Lilongwe in News and Marketing departments.

The source said this has happened behind the back of MBC Director General Bright Malopa.

“Yes we are suing MBC,” said one of the affected staff.

The public broadcaster headlined media recently after court tussle stopped a merger of the TV station and radio services which the Office of the President and Cabinet described as a “harried job by overenthuastic management.”

Under OPC orders, the merger was stopped and Malopa was directed by the OPC to write a report on the same.

Apparently it was the same Chimwemwe Banda who led the transition committee of the merger.

Others affected this time are Malumbo Chirwa, Prince Donda, James Ndovie to mention a few.

Two years ago a talented youngster Benedicto Mbewe was compensated over K3million by the courts after TVM management made him work for two years on temporary employment while promising him permanent work.
