MBC TV now on DSTV Channel 295: Multichoice says only beaming in Malawi

State-owned Malawi Broadcasting Corporation – MBC TV on Tuesday started showing on DStv Channel 295, a development which has drawn mixed reactions from Malawians.

If the comments on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are anything to go by, a lot of people are worried that with its programming, it is “shameful” to have MBC TV airing on DStv.

However, there is no need to worry as MultiChoice Malawi says the government controlled TV channel will only be showing within Malawi and not beyond borders.

The company’s sales and marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda told Nyasa Times that MBC TV will be available outside the country only if viewers in other countries subscribe to the channel in Malawi.Watching MBC TV on DSTV

“They have to register here in Malawi if they are to watch MBC TV outside the country, if not, the channel is only available to DStv subscribers here [in Malawi],” explained Nyirenda.

He gave an example of Kenya and Zambia, among the countries whose national TV stations are available on DStv, but are not accessible to Malawi.

MBC TV is a 24-hour free-to-air general entertainment channel that broadcasts in English and Chichewa. Apart from local programmes, it also broadcasts international channels such as BBC Focus on Africa and Chinese CCTV.

On DStv, the local TV is available to Premium, Compact+, Compact, Family, and Access bouquets, as well as all Combination bouquets and add-ons.
