MCP are govt in waiting: Chakwera says ‘I choose to dream with Malawians’
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is the country’s future ruling party, its president and leader of opposition Rev Dr Lazarus Chakwera said on Saturday when he held a political rally in his Lilongwe North West constituency.
“We are the government in waiting,” he said to thousands of supporters who attended what he called a ‘thank you’ meeting for their votes in last year’s elections.
Chakwera said it is his constituency which voted MCP overwhelmingly than almost a good number of constituencies in the country.
“You showed that you are true members of the party,” said Chakwera.
He assured the party supporters that MCP are “government in waiting, we are not just opposition.”
As Chakwera spoke, the crowd cheered.
MCP has always claimed that President Peter Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were elected on “fabricated results”.
Recently CSO released a 2014 Tripartite Election report entitled: “Election Situation Room: Analysis of the 2014 Tripartite Elections in Malawi” which describes the election as “Neither Fair nor Credible” and among other things calling for reforms in the country’s electoral processes and systems including enhancing the independence and technical capacity of the Malawi Election Commission (MEC) .
Chakwera said the MCP is working on revamping the party and building support in areas where it has no MPs such as the southern region
The leader of the opposition, whose party is proving to provide proper checks and balances in parliament, added that they able discharge their oversight role by opposing injustice, poverty, and bad governance.
He also said they oppose anyone in power whose activities create condition that allows corruption, injustice, poverty, unemployment and insecurity to lives.
According to Chakwera, he chooses to dream with Malawians of a presidency for the people, not for the government.
“I choose to dream with Malawians of a country where farmers make more money from their crops than traders. I choose to dream with Malawians of a country where government salaries are paid punctually – by the order of the system, not tardily by the orders of a President.
“I choose to dream with Malawians of a country whose cities have tarred roads and landscaped sidewalks not dirty roads, not potholes, not bushes. I choose to dream with Malawians of a country whose cities are secure by night and clean by day, not littered by day and feared by night,” said Chakwera.
Chakwera further said he chooses to dream with Malawians of a country in which the power of the sun and wind are harnessed through technology to extend the power grid to every Malawian home.
“I choose to dream with Malawians of a country in which hand-outs for votes are illegal. I choose to dream with Malawians of a country in which there is no state broadcaster to poison Malawians with propaganda. I choose to dream with Malawians of a country in which mechanisms of governance credibility, development, equality and democracy, security are guaranteed by the constitution.”
Chakwera said he chooses to dream with Malawians of a country in which “foreign aid will be a memory. Employment for young people will be readily available. Prosperity for all is a destiny and security for our community is a reality.”

Wake up from your dreams and face the realties. You failed to win because of the same rude behavior of conducting rallies in central. Nobody in the southern region and northern region knows you. Instead of going to these regions in order to sell yourself and market yourself well you are busy marketing yourself to people who knows you already. Your chances are of winning through southern region votes are remote. South belongs to DPP and UDF. The tribes in the south are Lomwes and Senas (DPP) and Yaos (UDF). This party leader will not cease to amaze me. Every time he makes a speech he shoots himself in the foot, is he schizophrenic? You have once again started limiting your jurisdictional area by coming up openly that it was only members from your constituency who massively voted MCP into where it is, don’t you think by saying so you are sidelining other areas in the central region who also voted for you. Peter Muthalika is already old and frail. You Lomwes watch out and you are the ones stealing and robbing the people. All you do is domestic work and prostitution. It is southerners who litter our streets. It is southerners who are responsible for most of the deforestration in the country. They are now attacking the Chikangawa Forest. You are the ones bringing down our GDP. The people of the north to be strong enough and not just be used by selfish southerners. Calls for a federal government are sincere and this shows we are fed up with southerners stealing our taxes.
The major problem with MCP is that it is regional just like the call for federal government. MCP has no base structure in the south and north and it wants to rule the whole Malawi. Mwauponda wauwisi. Chakwera is proving to be a weak leader with a very weak opposition. I question his leadership skills. He is reactive and his statements are equivocal. He just wants a position. I am not satisfied with his lukewarm statements on federalism, nepotism, regionalism, MSB sale, 92 billion kwacha, JB cashgate, sale of jet, looming of hunger in other parts of country, pay rise of MPs and leader of opposition , chasowa case, security, etc
May MCP remain in opposition for ever becuase MCP is making multiparty happen in Malawi. Otherwise, if you go into government that is the end multiparty in Malawi.
