MCP legislators hurl racist slurs at MP Bisnowaty: ‘Jew must go back home’
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators on Thursday afternoon took turns to hurl racist slurs at Lilongwe Central MP David Bisnowaty because he reminded the party of its brutal past.
It all started when Lilongwe Rural South legislature Peter Dimba was given the parliamentary floor to comment on a motion on farm inputs programme and food shortage moved by Harry Mkandawire.
Dimba claimed during the Kamuzu Banda administration, there was always enough food and if there were impending food shortage, the MCP led government was always prepared.
However, Bisnowaty, standing on a point of order, said there were severe food shortages even during the MCP era only that people were not allowed to say it openly due to the brutal dictatorship of the MCP leadership which heavily censored and muted people’s voices.
This did not go down well with other members of parliament from the MCP benches that called Bisnowaty all sorts of names including a foreigner, he does not have a village in Malawi, and he cannot point the grave of his grandfather in Malawi and other unprintable slurs.
“Khala pansi Iwee! … Ukudziwa chiyani zakuno ku Malawi munthu olowera pa passport ngati iwe!.. Foreigner (Sit down your a foreigner not a bona fine Malawian)”
Parliament degenerated into chaos as second deputy speaker Clement Chiwaya failed to control the high tempered MPs and asked the MCP leadership to restore order.
Another member was heard shouting “ Uyu ndi muyuda ochokera ku yudea, azipita kwawo! (You are a Jew, go back home).”
Bisnowatty – who was one of the people bankrolling MCP when it was in power – is believed to be Lebanese but he gave up his country of origin citizenship and adopted Malawian citizenship. He did not respond.
Rumphi East legislature Kamulepo Kaua stood without being recognized by the Speaker and said “Let us not discriminate against anybody, let us be Malawian, let us show leadership and I don’t prescribe to this no, no, no, no!”
However, Kalua was interrupted both by the speaker who was trying to calm the legislatures and another member who was continuing making racism remark.
The MCP MP went on to claim that Allan Chiyemekeza is the worst minister of Agriculture Malawi has ever had saying there are numerous problems rocking FISP yet he is just watching doing nothing.
He said it was surprising that over 800000 people, out of the targetted 1.5 million have not yet received coupons that will enable them buy farm inputs at cheaper price.
“If Malawi as a canteen, we could have closed shop,” said the MCP MP, saying it is either President Peter Mutharika has bad advisors or himself is a bad leader.
He said it is not surprising that the country is in this ad state claiming the very same bad advisors that ill advised former president Bingu wa Mutharika have now surrounded the incumbent head of state.
“The government should come out clear to tell the nation that it has failed to handle FISP programme this year,” said the MCP chief whip who faced several interjections as cabinet ministers stood up on points of order either to rule him out of order or clarify some points.
The MCP MP was forced to withdraw his statements that Chiyembekeza is the worst agriculture minister in Malawi and that Mutharika is surrounded y bad advisors after acting leader of the House Henry Mussa, who is also Democratic Progressive Party chief whip said this was unparliamentary.

Bisnowaty deserved it!! There was maize in abundance during Kamuzu’s time. Kamuzu never wanted the nation to suffer in form of hunger. Never in Kamuzu’s time. Maize was distributed at free cost to each and every family. So MP Bisnowaty, sorry to say, don’t you ever compare Kamuzu’s reign with this toothless bull’s visionless dictatorship. I will also be compelled to say what was already said about you.
Point of order – I for one I have seen Chiefs, police men & women and government officials who are working in South African and elsewhere in the world. When David was campaigning, where was the MCP member to stop him, today he can not claim of the Jew go back home, its too lat for that – this is time to work, if the Jew can bring means of development which I know they have let Malawi benefit.
For the MCP members please go back to the speech files of Kamuzu Banda of the 1979 when he was invited to Israel and addressed the members of parliament there – you will learn more than this cheap politics of MCP today. What David Bisnowaty said, is genuine truth, I was born that time and we were in heavy problems from the Malawi Young Pioneers, Malawi youth, women league was also too torturous in reporting anything, the councillors amatibela mbuzi and zakudya in the name of Kamuzu.
MCP – to advise sake; work towards development initiatives, copy the best of Kamuzu policies and make use. Some of them being food production, Umodzi, Descipline and the general peace and security – you wont go wrong, but fighting with individuls or government of Dr. Cjhilima and Professor Bingu, you are writing in water/kunyela mmadzi, it wont work.

We were wearing rags and were eating madeya during MCP more than we do now. What Bizinowate said is 100% correct. It was only Kasungu that was better fed by their kamuzu. Anybody who dared complain of poverty that time, he was simply being killed by MCP or kamuzu banda.

Much as I do not subscribe to racist slurs, I would expect Bisnowrothy to tell the truth and not buy face. No one in his all senses can compare the current man-made shortage of food to Malawians to the shortages during Kamuzu era. When food shortage emerged, Kamuzu requested people from other regions to contribute and that kept many people alive. It’s not like the current which is deliberately sidelining central and Northern region on issues of subsidy fertilizer yet it is the same regions which feed southern and eastern regions. This is where this government has goofed.
He is right- there were severe food shortages during Kamuzu time (the genocidal murdering bastard) but people were scared to say so lest they become crocodile dinner!. MCP will always have blood on their hands and now they also show that they are racist too!! the donors are watching very carefully! I voted for him because he has good plans for our constituency. He is Malawian and it is MCP Kamuzu who gave him Malawi citizenship after he contributed greatly in security, commerce and health of the country.
Education is very important, it teaches people to think on their feet.
The majority, and I make no apology, thew majority of the parliamentarians in Malawi lack education, and therefore they resort to lies,innuendo, old wives tales and damn right insults.
Malawians, a majority of them have no idea how to debate issues, even at drinking places, people resort to “Ndiye kuti mukhale ndani?” or try very hard to minimise others’ achievements, “Degree yaku Bolton!” But if you ask then “Yanu ndiyakuti?” the reply is “Siyaku Bolton!”- They do not have a degree and their MCE is of of 36 points.
It will take this country at least another 50 years just to move one step in the right developmental direction.
