MCP MP Malondera says ‘confidence gives you courage to stand alone’ in cryptic social media post amid political tensions

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) MP Steven “Baba Steve” Malondera has taken to Facebook with a reflective message on confidence and personal conviction, telling followers that building an extraordinary life requires breaking away from the crowd rather than following it.

Malondera says ‘confidence gives you courage to stand alone

In the post, Malondera, who also chairs the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), shared what he described as a deeply held belief.

‘I have deep felt belief that “you’ll never build an extraordinary life by copying ordinary people. Confidence gives you the courage to follow your convictions even when you stand alone”,’ he wrote.

The MP went on to link the message to the country’s broader political and social climate, calling on Malawians to approach the future with hope rather than division.

‘We must have that confidence to face the future with hope without destroying others,’ he wrote. ‘You cannot rise by destroying others. Have a blessed and successful day.’

The message, while not directly naming any individual or issue, comes at a time of heightened political tension in Malawi, with Malondera himself at the centre of mounting public frustration over the stalled Public Accounts Committee report into the controversial K128 billion Amaryllis Hotel deal – an inquiry he chairs, and one that failed to reach Parliament before MPs adjourned the current sitting sine die.

Malondera has previously said the report’s fate ultimately rests with Parliament, adding that he personally wanted Malawians to see its contents once finalised.

Whether Thursday’s reflective post was intended as a broader life message or carried any connection to the pressures surrounding the stalled inquiry remains unclear, with the MP offering no further elaboration beyond the original text.

The post has nonetheless drawn attention on social media, with followers offering a mix of supportive and speculative responses regarding its intended meaning.
