The MP said he donated the bags of cement to affected vendors at Kasungu market which was gutted by a fire last Saturday.

Speaking during the symbolic presentation in Kasungu, Nkhata said the symbolic presentation want to ensure “transparency and accountability so that the affected people should actually see the cement which was promised.”

He said many vendors suffered losses and cannot afford to buy building materials for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the market.

“ There is a committee which will monitor the use of the cement. We are very happy to have managed to source money from development funds,” he said.

Nkhata said he decided to use his personal finances to kick start the process so that welL wishers can follow.

He appealed to the corporate world such as Airtel Malawi, TNM, Shayona Cement, Press Trust, building construction companies and many more companies, to join hands helping Kasungu vendors.

Nkhata said he also plans to provide iron sheets considering that rains are around the corner.

“After this donation, I will also buy iron sheets to roof the shades,” he pledged.

Nkhata said he has set aside K2.5 million as his contribution towards the project as they will be waiting for the Local Development Fund allocation.

Receiving the cement on behalf of the victims, Kasungu main market vendors committee chairperson, Burnet Sanudi, commended Nkhata for the donation, saying it was wtimely as most affected vendors could not afford to buy reconstruction materials.

“Cement is a very expensive commodity and for someone to assist us with such a donation we don’t take it for granted, we will make use this donation in rehabilitating the shades here,” said Sanudi.

He, however, asked for other well-wishers to emulate what Nkhata has done, saying this will go a long way in helping Kasungu vendors who cannot afford to buy rebuilding items.
