The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials in Karonga have slammed the party’s newly launched structure called the ‘champion’, saying it is dividing members as well as bringing tension.
The ‘champion’ is a group of MCP members who are mandated to lobby people as well as resources for the party which was launched early this year.
Speaking during a party rally at Mlare on Saturday, the Karonga Central Constituency Chairperson Hastings Mwangulu asked MCP top officials to reorganise the structure.
“The champion group is bringing division in our party especially here in the central constituency,” said Mwangulu.
“This is because its members are doing things on their own without following the party’s policy and structure. For instance, holding party meetings as well as monopolizing resources such as the party uniforms,” he disclosed.
He said the group decision to boycott the function which was graced by the party’s top officials was a clear indication that their agenda is to create parallel structures not to build.
In his remarks, Cornelius Mwalwanda who is the second deputy director of economic in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), backed the group saying “the group’s idea is good but its implementation should be improved.”
The former Deputy Minister of economic also worried with the stalled of the developmental projects he initiated during his period as the law maker of the constituency.
However, MCP Northern Region Chairperson Kezzie Msukwa said the group in the area is being misunderstood because one of its top officials was a supporter of Frank Mwenefumbo who won 2014 elections as well as a long term opponent to Mwalwanda.
The main agenda of the rally was to evaluate the supporters of the party in the constituency.
Meanwhile, Mwalwanda showed satisfaction with hundreds of people who attended the meeting saying it is a sign of his and the party’s victory on 2019 general elections.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
