MCP power struggle: why toppling Chithyola Banda is ‘step one’ to ousting Chakwera

A furious row over whether Malawi’s Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda has gone mysteriously silent on the issues gripping the nation has exposed deep public confusion over exactly what his job actually involves, according to political analysts.

‘Two different jobs!’: Analysts hit back at critics of ‘silent’ opposition leader Chithyola Banda

Critics have accused Chithyola Banda of failing to speak out on trending national controversies — but insiders insist the backlash stems from a fundamental mix-up between two entirely separate roles: Leader of Opposition, and party spokesperson.

The Leader of Opposition is, in fact, a formal constitutional office enshrined in the Malawi Constitution and Parliamentary Standing Orders — a governance institution in its own right, not a mouthpiece expected to churn out daily soundbites for the Malawi Congress Party.

His actual mandate, analysts explain, is to scrutinise government policy, propose credible alternatives and lead opposition business inside Parliament — a world away from the rapid-fire political commentary expected of a party spokesperson, whose job is to respond daily, defend the party and engage in the relentless news cycle.

Governance analyst Ceasar Kondowe didn’t hold back in defending the embattled opposition leader, telling Nyasa Times his silence on minor controversies is by design, not neglect.

“Chithyola does not comment on every trending issue. When he speaks, it carries the weight of an alternative government,” Kondowe said.

He explained that the Leader of Opposition reserves his voice for matters of genuine national importance — constitutional issues, major policy shifts, the State of the Nation Address and the national budget — rather than wading into every daily news story.

“People expect him to behave like a spokesperson. Those are two different jobs,” Kondowe insisted.

And he delivered a stinging rebuke to critics, arguing that if the party spokesperson falls silent, responsibility shifts to the Secretary General — not to the Leader of Opposition at all.

“The Leader of Opposition would be capturing other people’s jobs if he issued statements every day outside Parliament. That is the job of the SG and spokesperson,” he said, pointing out that Chithyola Banda has in fact spoken out forcefully on critical national issues — but inside Parliament, exactly where his constitutional mandate places him.

But the real explosive claim lies elsewhere.

Sources deep inside the Malawi Congress Party have told Nyasa Times that the online campaign targeting Chithyola Banda, fronted by so-called “concerned citizens,” is in fact linked to a bitter internal power struggle tearing through the party.

Insiders allege Chithyola Banda is viewed by disgruntled factions as the last line of defence standing between them and party president Lazarus Chakwera — with the calculation being that toppling Chithyola Banda first would make it far easier to move against Chakwera himself.

“It has nothing to do with the role of Leader of Opposition. It is a fight for leadership of the party,” Kondowe said bluntly, cutting through the public debate to expose what insiders claim is really driving the campaign.

Amid the turmoil, moves are already underway to tighten coordination between the office of the Leader of Opposition and the party’s communications wing, in a bid to clearly separate strategic parliamentary leadership from the daily grind of political messaging.
