MCP says Mutharika should not rewrite history of Malawi
The main opposition Malawi Congress Party ( MCP) has challenged President Peter Mutharika that he should know that he can’t rewrite Malawi’s history by what the party calls “misguided utterances.”
The sentiments comes against the background of the President’s remarks which insinuated that MCP did not bring in any tangible development to the country.
APM as he is popularly known by his followers made public utterances to the effect that MCP did not bring development when he officially opened the 13 km By pass road in Lilongwe.
MCP Director of Public Relations, Alekeni Menyani, in an interview with Nyasa Times said Malawi had a golden era in the 80’s unlike his (APM) party’s “trial and error” techniques that has sunk Malawi to an all time low in terms of economic development.
“It is laughable that he woke up in a house (Kamuzu Palace) built by MCP , travelled on a road constructed by MCP and uttered such remarks.
“But it is not surprising coming from a person who had to give up an American Green Card to seek the presidency. He is alien to his country and what has been happening,” said Menyani, adding that MCP as a party will offer to orient him.
He also wondered why his brother (Bingu) put up the only statue in the Capital honouring MCP’s founding father Kamuzu Banda, arguing that his sentiments will anger the departed.
Menyani also said the country had Malawi Development Corporation, Agrimal, Optichem, Nzeru Radio, Mulanje Peak, Vipcor, Maldeco, Malawi Pharmacy plus many other companies that started and flourished under Kamuzu because he had a vision for the country.
He argued that MDC had lots of subsidiaries under it but when UDF took over power from MCP they milked it through dubious loans and mismanagement until it collapsed.
“If we had started with some of these parties we wouldn’t have University of Malawi, Capital Hill and other major infrastructure projects. Whatever money gets into Treasury they siphon without shame. Very disappointing,” argued Menyani.
He also said APM was here at the time of independence and saw what it was like.
“He is just trying to provoke Malawians of honesty and virtue in whatever he is saying. As MCP we take that as a joke. He wants lighter moments owing to the pressure on him to deliver,” said Menyani.

You have your education, wealth, house, car etc that is your personal development. Then we have infrastructure development such as roads, railways, airports, schools, universities, hospitals, etc these are not personal or individual developments. These are national or communal or public types of development.
Since 1994 the country has gone backwards both in terms of personal and national development. Successive govt failing to maintain infrastructure developments by kamuzu, all have crumbled, roads, hospitals, airports, education etc. All this due to systematic serious thieving of govt money by udf, dpp and pp.
Escalating and excessive crime, famine or njala, poverty, thieving during multi party era, means even individual development has gone backwards for most people.

I have mentioned infrastructure, as infrastructure you have decided to call it development, that is textbook thinking. In Malawi infrastructure can hardly be called development. Roads are only in cities, so development is about cities. Are there networks of roads joining villages? Are there Quality schools? Quality hospitals? Quality Universities? in other words do we have quality infrastructure? By your own definition there is no development to make noise about.

Its a sad development that as Malawi we still give the Muthalika family to govern Malawi. Yes its a constitutional right to do likewise but from the sufferings we had the last term of Late Bingu(MHSRIP), I would never thought we will usher in another Muthalika in government. My Strong suggestion is to change constitution where it says even during elections the incumbent presidents still has powers. I would like to make Malawians understand that these politicians in power depend on that section for rigging during elections. This has to stop. LET THE CONSTITUTION CHANGE TO EFFECT THAT A WEEK BEFORE ELECTIONS DAY THERE SHOULD BE NATIONAL GOVERNING COUNCIL TAKING CARE OF GOVERNMENT ISSUES SO THAT ALL PARTIES AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES BECOME AT PAR. I propose that the Governing Council as was the case in 1994 should be comprised of Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Supreme Court Judge, Army Commander, Inspector General of Police and others that may deem being important. The scenario if put to work will not make the incumbent presidents to abuse police and army personnel to act in his or her favour as was the case in Tanzania. If Africa adopts this then there will be seriousness in the running of government affairs by the so called ruling parties. You know what, Mr Menyani? Winners always write history; check the historical records of the world, and you will find many distortions. Even school textbooks are full of these scripts. The thing is to let people decide, based on what they “know” to be the truth.
So, don’t just swallow the line, that “Kamuzu did this. Kamuzu did that …” hook and sinker.
First it was not Kamuzu’s money. It was Malawians’ money. And secondly, the money that son of a gun and his cronies stole from the people was 1000x the money that dictatorship spend on the little infrastructure they claim to have accomplished in this country.
And without the open looting of the treasury by Kamuzu and his coterie, during that proto–dictatorship, Malawi would have been twice as developed by now. And that is a conservative guestimate.

MCP and in respect of the late Kamuzu Banda, the current administration is deleting the good work of Banda. Banda knew what he was doing, he knew 90% of Malawians are illiterate (uneducated) and they deserve management, he managed us the proper way and he show the west that Malawi yes in Africa but its a particular African state. We are respected in every English speaking country because of Kamuzu Banda, the man was intelligent – follow his speeches and the one he made in Balaka 1970 and the 1979 in Israeli, 1980 in South Africa, you will understand what he stands for.
The infighting of leadership between Tembo and Mgwanda, brought mistrust on people and many went with UDF, and now the time of born frees; they are talking one way and forgetting themselves of what they want to achieve tomorrow.
When DPP is bring in; Malata subsidy, roads, community colleges, and they are talking of green belt, fever must drip in, these are powerful programmes, and history will be re-written you want it or u don’t want. People don’t eat words. knowing how to talk can not bring food on the table.

Does development go backwards?
And What do we mean by development?
Personally,I believe development is not collective, development is individual. People that have tasted a developed life do not go backwards, they go forward and develop themselves further. How many people in Malawi or families in Malawi that were well to do during Dr Banda’s time are still well to do? That is the litmus test for development.
Dr Banda was clever, he hoodwinked Malawians, and we still are using his measure for development, which was “calling the provision of infrastructure as development”
Infrastructure is not development, it is a tool to aid development, schools help people to have the ability to develop themselves, Hospitals ensure people are healthy to develop themselves, roads ensure that those that produce, can move their products to where they are needed, hence developing themselves.
Development is individual, unless and until the majority of individuals cease to be poor, there is no development.
MCP was in power close to 30 years, how many people can claim their families are rich from wealth brought over from MCP era? Companies such as Import and Exprot, Chipiku, in short Press Corporation belonged to Dr Banda, so he and his so called family were developed, not Malawi. And in the fashion of the Malawian, “When the father who started a business dies, the business dies with him” Most companies during MCP belonged to HKB and his European friends (Tiny Rowlands (RONRO?) etc for those of you who are old enough.
Press employed 75% of graduates now graduates are roaming the streets stealing, you call that development? In 30 years the graduates from UNIMA should have started off shoots to Press, but were they allowed NO!, so how could there have been development during MCP?
MCP did not bring tangible development, it embarked on providing infrastructure for the country, then stopped anyone who dared to emulate Kamuzu by starting their own businesses. So how did people develop? They did not, Dr Bandas mentality is killing this country up to now “The president knows all, owns all”
