MEC holding of byelections unconstitional, says civil society

A civil society group on elections, the National Elections Systems Trust (NEST) has warned the Malawi Electorol Commission against holding byelections on November 1, saying it would be illegal.

NEST executive director Unandi Banda said the Republican Constitution, Section 75, clearly stipulates that it is only the chairman who is mandated to announce poll results.

MEC chairman Maxon Mbendera collapsed and died a few months ago.
