MEC refers DPP complaint of electoral violence to Malawi police: ‘Criminal conduct’

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Dr Chifundo Kachale says the commission has reviewed the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) complaint of electoral violence which they have found that they border on criminal conduct and has since referred the matter to the Malawi Police Service.

Kayira: Suspects arrested

DPP administrative secretary Francis Mphepo has been complaining that Tuesday’s vote was marred with violence as their party agents were beaten, abducted and denied access in some polling centres, especially in opposition strong holds.

Addressing the media at the National Tally Centre in Blantyre, Kachale said the Commission received a complaint from DPP regarding “various incidences happening in Lilongwe whereby its monitors were harassed, intimidated and abducted.”

Kachale, a judge of the High Court of Malawi, said: “The Commission has looked into the matters and found that they border on criminal conduct.”

He added: “Therefore, the complaint has been referred to the Malawi Police Service for further investigation.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Noel Kayira said an unspecified number of people had been arrested in relation to electoral crimes and were still under police custody.

“Let me assure Malawians that the law will take its course on all those that have been arrested in relation to this election,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kachale said the Commission is also reviewing log books received from all the councils to see if there are any complaints that were not satisfactorily resolved at the council level.

“Such complaints will be determined by the Commission before releasing the results,” he said.

Kachale also said MEC would be releasing the results from all districts as soon as possible.

He announced results from three districts—Likoma, Mwanza and Chiradzulu—representing 18 percent of the total votes.

Next update will be at 9pm.

These elections were meant to protect the Tumbukas fake legacy,Anyway,God can also allow satan to dominate sometimes. The truth shall prevail if brave Lhomwes and Yawos will discharge their rights too.It will be ablood war amongst tribes and believe me in 2025.Elections will end into a tribal war,That is Tumbukas and Chewas against all Southern tribes and the Lhomwes will win that war. They have been oppressed by the Tumbuka judiciary to with the intention to allow fellow Thumbukas ride upon dull Chewas, since the Lhomwe were a threat to thier fake legacy.Mphukira zaalomwe zomwe zili mujudiciary have seen what the Chief Justice… Read more »

Pepa Cadet walira mokweza …. But know this, your thirst for blood dies here, what you wish for Malawi will only happen to you n your family. Malawi fears God not man. We are one though divided by regions. The satanism in dpp which you were part of is what we have removed and will still remove until decency returns to this land. Alliance is set to rule 20+ years, so just swallow this fact.

If the criminal offense prevented party monitors from discharging their duties freely then it also becomes an electoral matter. It is therefore hypocritical for Kachale to treat this matter as simply criminal. Votes that were cast and counted in the absence of DPP monitors can not be trusted and its credibility must be examined for the sake of fairness. But we are not surprised because Kachale is very excited and feels privileged in serving the interests of his fellow tumbukas hence he can not see where he is unjust.

Are you sure of what you are talking about or you want to show us your ignorance.??? In all the log books presented at Main Tally Centre in Blantyre none has a complaint from DPP claiming that votes were counted in absence of its monitors and infact all the tally sheets were duly signed by DPP monitors. If the records showed to the contrary then it would have made sense for them to complain and the complaints would have qualified as electral matters under the jurisdiction of MEC. So if all there monitor’s signed the tally sheets and none complained… Read more »

is stopping someone from voting a simple criminal act? is chasing someone from monitoring elections only a criminal offence? are these not issues needing to be dealt with by the commission? i like the precedent that ruling by the commission sets!!
