MEC respects court ruling for rerun in Lilongwe City South East

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said it will respect the court ruling ordering to conduct fresh elections in Lilongwe City South East constituency where a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Ulemu Msungama challenged the results which found that Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Bently Namasasu winner.

The High Court in Lilongwe on Tuesday ordered MEC to hold a rerun .

MEC spokesman Sangwani Mwafulirwa said: “We respect the ruling of the court and the Commission will meet to map the way forward.”

He added: “The Commission has always been ready to conduct by-elections at any time whenever it is required to do so in accordance with the law.”

In her ruling, Justice Esme Chombo said making a ruling on the matter based on the documentary evidence submitted by Mec as respondent, Msungama as petitioner and Namasasu as interested party to the case would not achieve equity and fairness.

Some of the evidence, which the court had earlier ordered be recounted, was destroyed by fire which razed down part of the warehouse in Lilongwe containing 2 400 ballot boxes.

Thumbs up for the court’s ruling. For fairness sake, rerun of elections is welcome and let the true winner emerge.

I disagree with 1.1 and 1 because these are purely members of mcp and their thinking is still shallow if not undemocratic. Donors have nothing to do with who had won even if mcp would have won no donor would come in until the mess created by pp would have been delt with to donors satisfaction. …Umbuli ndiye ukadalipodi!

Mukunama amwene! Donors are not happy with DPP led govt, if it were MCP donors could have resumed their aid, DPP has its own cashgate of 92bn which it is failing to take action on

Aaah inu a MEC!! Stop playing mind-games with us. You just want to play your mind-tricks in allowing for the re-run, no more injunctions naaay????!!!!
Munatibela kale ma voti so why should we have confidence in you and trust that you will run free and credible elections… The fact that majority of people from Lilongwe did not want APM to be president but voted for Chakwera says it all!!!
