MEC to keep voter registration centres open on Mothers’ Day holiday

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says its centres will remain open on Mothers’ Day – 15th October, 2013 – despite it being a public holiday so that people can make use of the holiday by registering.

The sixth phase of voter registration exercise – which will cover Lilongwe City, Chitipa and Dowa districts, Mchinji South and Southwest constituencies and Dedza West, Central, Central East, Southwest and Northwest constituencies – ends October 28th.

MEC urged the citizenry in a statement issued Monday night to dedicate the day to mothers in a special way.

“You can take them [mothers] for registration at the nearest centre if it happens that they are in the area where registration will take place in the sixth phase,” reads the statement in part.

It adds: “Explain to the grandmothers, that despite age and frailty they still have a right to vote. Help them to make it to the registration centres to register.

“At the registration centres, they will not queue but will be given priority as is the case with expectant mothers, sick persons and those with various physical and health challenges.”
