Minibus, Prado in serious head-on collision

A Mchinji-bound Toyota Coaster minibus from Lilongwe carrying over 30 passengers and a Toyota 4 X 4 Prado with a driver and passenger were on Saturday morning involved in a dangerous head-on collision at Chitedze Research Station.

According eyewitnesses to young boy of less than six years is feared dead and his pregnant mother sustained serious leg injuries. They were both in the front seat of the Coaster with the driver who also sustained multiple injuries.

The eyewitnesses told Nyasa Times on the scene of the accident that both the driver of the Toyota Prado, registration number MH 4243 and that of the minibus attempted to avoid hitting a mentally-disabled man who was standing in the middle of the road when they swerved into one direction causing the collision.

A traffic police officer on the scene, who preferred anonymity, said the two drivers were obviously over speeding because if they were not, the collision could have not been such serious.

Scores of the passengers sustained varying injuries and were rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital in the Capital City.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data published in 2011, road traffic accidents deaths in Malawi reached 4,815 or 2.31 percent of total deaths.
