Minister Ben Phiri wants girls’ football team in every school

Local Government Minister Ben Phiri has ordered that every school in Malawi start a girls’ football team, with support from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Phiri was speaking in Thyolo at the installation of Senior Chief Mulenga.

He said he has agreed the plan with the Ministry of Sports, which will use part of the K100 million set aside for sports from the CDF.

“The Scorchers are making us proud, and we want every school to have girls’ football, netball, and for football to continue,” he said. “We must find those who will take over from Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga.”

The minister also asked chiefs to help protect children. He urged them to help tackle the defilement of children, saying some of their fellow chiefs are already in custody over such cases.
