Minister Chiumia orders arrest of 42 NRB officials

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia on Sunday accompanied armed police officers and ordered the arrest of National Registration Bureau (NRB) officers who were holding a meeting to demand arrears dating back to May 2017.

Chiumia: Orders arrest

Chiumia went to Police to ask for officers to accompany her and arrest the NRB workers at Shoprite premises in Mzuzu, after she got wind of their meeting.

Police arrested 42 NRB workers but some were released and only 14 spent a night in custody.

Chiumia defended her orders for arrest, saying she had to act for fear of conduct that could have likely breached peace and she wanted to “protect government property.”

The suspects have since been charged with unlawful assembly and conspiracy to commit a felony, according to Northern Region Police deputy spokesperson Maurice Chapola.

NRB spokesperson Norman Fulatira, who  confirmed that there are arrears dating back to May this year, said he had been informed of the arrest of about 14 NRB officers But did not have details

Is it a law that workers should inform government when they want to discuss their welfare? The first thing you need to do is to look at why and how these arrears are coming into existence. Sometimes funds may have been allocated for these people but may not have reached them in full. This must stop. Don’t just silence these people listen to them so that they can do their job happily. I don’t think it is necessary to arrest these people.

I have never seen a coward person like you Mwini… I don’t what kind of a person you are. I think you resemble your tribalistic Mutharika. Do you think Malawi could have been complete without north? Which Malawi are you referring to when you say “Tumbukaz does this to Malawi”.
You are a disgrace to the society.
Malawi belongs to Malawians from Chitipa to Nsanje and from Nkhotakota to Mchinji

Foolish brute. Is there anything about Tumbuka here? You are pathetic with your govt. You think being given a job by govt is an opportunity? It is their right and they are entitled to right remuneration under labour laws. Remember those are taxes from all of us not coming from Chiumia’s pocket. Fortunately, this govt of dictators is coming to an end in 2019

I choose to conquer with others here that this govt is full of elite (educated) people but their actions are none to be desired. That’s why MCP president called them educated fools. But I also choose to differ with some here that DPP led govt will go nowhere. This govt shall successfully pass a litmus test on 20/05/2019 during tripatite elections. MCP will come second followed by other parties. Remember we are not going back to Dark Age where torture, false imprisonment, among others become the order of the day, we are moving forward. Mark my words. We need good… Read more »

Tumbukas are good people dont castigate them, only a few of them ndi ozikonda we cannot deny that fact, just as good as other tribes muli abwino mulinso ena ozikonda. Nanga George Chaponda ndi Mtumbuka? The late Aleke Banda was a beautiful leader at party level. So don’t mix up issues here, Malawi is a very small country with population less than 18 million. In other countries Malawi is only a city eg Abuja in Nigeria with over 20 million residents. Vuto la a Malawi sitimachepa kuiwala ngati kuyamwa. Lets unite as Malawians we are brothers and sisters, and lets… Read more »
