Minister Pledges Stronger Government–LUANAR Partnership to Boost Aquaculture and Fisheries
Minister of Natural Resources Patricia Wiskes has assured the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) of strengthened government support through deeper collaboration with its Centre for Excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries to drive growth in the sector.
Wiskes made the remarks on Saturday after touring the facility, where she commended LUANAR for its vital role in producing skilled human resources and advancing innovation in fisheries and aquaculture. She described the institution as central to Malawi’s development agenda.
“The school is a key strategic partner in achieving national food and nutrition security goals, and it really deserves total Government support to achieve its dreams,” she said.
The Minister stressed that increasing fish production in Malawi will depend on strong partnerships between government and research institutions, positioning LUANAR as a cornerstone in achieving sustainable food systems and improved nutrition.
LUANAR Vice Chancellor Emmanuel Kaunda welcomed the Minister’s visit, describing it as a significant moment for the sector and the institution.
“To us this is a transformation for the sector, as well as history in my time as Vice Chancellor. Countries that succeed in aquaculture and other sectors do so through close collaboration between government, the private sector, and academia. Government’s role in providing policy direction and support is critical, and this visit has been fruitful,” he said.
The Centre for Excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries was also hailed for its impact, having trained and graduated numerous Master’s and PhD students who are now contributing to the sector. The centre continues to support government mega farm initiatives with technical expertise and serves as a key hub for fingerling production, playing an important role in expanding aquaculture in Malawi.
The visit included a tour of the aquaculture laboratory and fish farm, followed by discussions on strategic areas of collaboration and targeted interventions aimed at accelerating commercialization and ensuring sustainable growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
