Miss Malawi auditions go to Lilongwe

The second phase of the search for this year’s Miss Malawi beauty pageant contestants goes to the capital city and auditions are on this Saturday at Lilongwe Hotel from 9am to 4pm.

This follows the launch of the event on 29th July and its first auditions that took place few weeks ago in the northern city of Mzuzu where a total of 24 girls qualified for the preliminary round of the competition.

After Lilongwe, where the same number of prospective Miss Malawi 2011 contestants will be identified, the last round of the auditions will go down to the commercial city, Blantyre, where 24 other models will also be identified.

To qualify for the competition, the applicants should be aged between 17 to 24 years old, at least be 1.6m tall, waist size of not more than 12/34, must have or be going through tertiary education and must be citizens of Malawi.

Lorato Charimba: Miss Blantyre open to all girls regardless of nationality

The 2011 Miss Malawi involves the general public as they will have the final say on which girls should make it in the final round.

“This year’s event is the revolution [and] there is public voting. The best eight from Blantyre, best eight from Lilongwe [and] best eight from Mzuzu will go in camp and the public will start eliminating [one at a time],” disclosed Eduardo Kankhomba, who is in the organizing team.

In this year’s event, there are two grand prizes, BMW automobiles, which will be won by the beauty queen herself and one voting member of the general public through a raffle draw.

The reigning Miss Malawi is Blantyre-based Faith Chibale, aged 22, who was crowned in October 2010 at the age of 21 and went home with a Japanese reconditioned Nissan March car.

Meanwhile, seven girls are said to have booked the slots in the finals of the Miss Blantyre after its first auditions last Saturday at Malawi Sun Hotel, according to Lorato Charimba.

Organisers, RedRose Models, are conduction another round of audition this weekend as  its publicist Pearson Nkhoma said “10 contestants will be selected to compete for the prestigious crown on 8th October at Shire Highlands Hotel.”

Miss Blantyre has been opened to all girls regardless of their cultural and racial background.
