Miss Malawi collapses in China

Hours after she made headlines on international online media and social networks for shoving Miss New Zealand at the Miss World finale in China, Malawi’s beauty queen Susan Mtegha on Tuesday collapsed at Beijing International Airport.

Nyasa Times understands that the 24-year-old model, fainted soon after she checked-in at the airport as she was about to depart China through South African Airways, returning home from the world beauty pageant.

Vitu Kamanga of Artistic Agency, managers of Miss Malawi, confirmed the news in a telephone interview with Nyasa Times Tuesday evening.

“Yes she emailed me few hours ago that she had fainted. She said soon after checking-in, she became light-headed and decided to go to the bathroom to cool down, that’s where she collapsed,” he said.

Kamanga however said it was not yet known how long Mtegha stayed unconscious, “but the good news is that she’s now fine. The airport medical personnel were quick to resuscitate her.”

He further disclosed that due to the incident, Mtegha, who was scheduled to arrive home Tuesday afternoon, missed her flight and in the meantime they are trying to get another flight for her.

“She can’t overstay there because it will be costly. We’re trying our best to get her home as soon as possible and we’re hopeful by tomorrow she will be leaving China.”

The push

Commenting on the accusations from Director of Miss World NZ that Miss Malawi pushed 18-year-old Collette Lochore, Kamanga said they were yet to hear Mtegha’s side of the story.

“We’re yet to hear from her on what happened, but I don’t think it was intentional because if it was, she’d have been disqualified right away.

“We will talk about it when she’s back home, right now we just want to get her back home,” said the Artistic Agency director.

Mtegha, a fashion designer and dancer, only managed to appear in the Top 20 list of the dancing competition in the pageant, which saw Miss China, Yu Wenxia winning the global crown.
