Miss Malawi slams ‘meaningless’ ranking as Ireen Navicha fights for Top 40 spot

The Miss Malawi Organisation has hit back after reports claimed the country’s Miss World 2026 hopeful had been ranked a lowly 64th out of the field of contestants — branding the claims “irrelevant” and insisting they have nothing to do with how the pageant is actually judged.

Public relations officer Stephen Mdala rushed to Navicha’s defence, dismissing the ranking — which has been doing the rounds among bloggers and on social media — as nothing more than guesswork dressed up as fact.

“The 64th ranking is unofficial and does not represent what Miss World is about,” he insisted.

“Different bloggers and media houses are currently rating contestants and those are just their opinions and should be treated as such. Miss World has not started releasing their standouts as of now.”

Mdala explained that the real competition unfolds behind the scenes, with contestants racking up marks through a gruelling series of challenges and activities long before they ever set foot on the main stage — scores that, he said, will prove decisive as the field is whittled down.

And the road to the crown is brutal.

According to Miss World’s own social media announcements, the pageant kicks off with a first cull to a Top 40 — 10 beauties from each of the four continental groups: Africa, the Americas and Caribbean, Asia, and Europe.

Some lucky contestants can bypass the danger zone entirely by triumphing in fast-track competitions such as Beauty With a Purpose, Multimedia, Head-to-Head and Top Model — guaranteeing themselves an automatic spot in the Top 40, while judges hand-pick the rest.

From there, the pressure ratchets up further: the Top 40 is slashed to 20, then to a nail-biting Top 12 decided by judges and the public vote. That dozen is cut down again to just six — made up of the Beauty With a Purpose winner, one representative from each continent, and the People’s Choice victor — before the survivors go head-to-head for the crown itself.

For now, Mdala said, Navicha’s sights are firmly set on the challenges still to come — chief among them Top Model, where hopefuls will be scrutinised and scored by judges.

Miss World’s official channels confirmed the Top Model showdown got underway with its opening round at Dragon Beach in Hải Phòng, Vietnam — with all 111 national ambassadors strutting their stuff in designs by local Vietnamese designers.

Navicha, who holds the title of Miss Malawi First Princess, is flying the flag for her country as one of the 111 contestants battling it out at the 75th Anniversary Miss World competition.
