M’mbelwa council chairperson vows to transform Mzimba

Newly elected M’mbelwa District Council Chairperson, Dan Nkosi, has pledged to steer Mzimba District into prosperity through implementation of programmes that are tailored to enhance socio-economic development of the district.

Nkosi: To transform Mzimba

Nkosi made the pledge Saturday during his acceptance speech soon after he was elected chairperson of the council during a full council meeting called for the councilors to take oaths at Mzimba Boma.

Nkosi said his first task would be to develop mechanisms on how to mobilize financial resources that could help the council to provide consistent and quality services to the people of the district.

He said with support from fellow councilors, he would work to cultivate cordial working relationship with the council secretariat to ensure that all the resources are injected into projects and services that aim at improving the welfare of the people.

He said this would help in the prevention of abuse of resources by some individuals.

Nkosi challenged that although most people in Mzimba are in abject poverty, the district has a lot of resources, which if well exploited, can generate wealth which can improve people’s economic status.

Besides abundant avenues for the locally generated resources the district boasts of, Nkosi cited lots of deposits of precious stones in some parts of the district which are not yet exploited as some of the easy wealth the district fails to tap and benefit from.

“Mzimba District is not poor. People of Mzimba, right now, are sitting on gold.  The district has envious mineral deposits which are not exploited to boost its economy,” said Nkosi.

He expressed concern over the prevalence of illegal mining by unscrupulous traders who smuggle the stones to neighbouring countries where they fetch a lot of money.

The chairperson vowed to ensure the council is a key beneficiary of any form of legalized mining activity besides waging war against illegal mining to flash out precious stone smugglers.

Before elections were held, the District Commissioner (DC) for Mzimba, Thomas Chirwa, cautioned the councilors to ensure that they elect a chair person who would be development conscious and visionary.

Chirwa said if they voted for a person who would always be pushed to make decisions, the district could not prosper in development.
